Community Free Dental Clinic was established to give the residents of Madison County, Alabama free dental care because Alabama is believed to be one of the poorest states in the US. A lot of Alabamans live from paycheck to paycheck because they are undereducated. The initiative was launched in 2013 and they have been expanding since then. Over the years, a lot of doctors have volunteered at one time or the other.
Details about participants of the project
The organization is currently head by Brandy Brannon Smith (Chairperson) who is a banker by profession. The Vice Chairperson of the initiative is Dr. Alicia Weeks. She graduated with the highest honors from Rutgers College in Rutgers University. She did her internal medicine residency at Cooper University where she was once the Chief Resident Doctor.
Hunter Hoskins is the Finance Chair while one of the dentists that has volunteered in the program is Lindalee Clayton. There are several other members of the project who do not have key functions. They also have licensed nurses who attend to patients too. It is important to make it clear that this is a non-profit organization so the members and dental experts are only volunteers.
They evaluate and also educate patients. Their major dental care is extractions as well as dental cleanings. However, they do not accept walk-ins. If you want their services, you must first call to register and book appointment.
To qualify for the free dental care, you must be 19 years or older and you must also have a picture ID. In addition, you must be a resident of Madison County and you must also be able to prove that you have no dental insurance. Most importantly, you should also be able to prove that you are a low income earner. To prove that you are low income earner, you can present any of the following.
- Federal Assistance document
- Unemployment or Workers’ Compensation
- Social Security
- Disability Statement
- Tax return for the previous year
- Food Stamps statement of benefits
The major benefit of the initiative is that it offers free dental care
The two major drawbacks of the program are:
- It offers only one dental care and that is extraction
- More hands are still needed
They are currently seeking more volunteers because the program needs to expand to meet growing demand.
The clinic is located on 2341 Whitesburg Drive, Madison County.
